The New York Lottery started in 1967 and as has been mentioned above, it is the third-oldest modern lottery game in the United States after the Puerto Rico Lottery and the New Hampshire Lottery which began in 1934 and 1964 respectively. It is operated and regulated by the New York State Gaming Commission.

Playing the New York Lottery

The New York Lottery’s current format is a 6/59+1 format. According to this format, players are expected to select 6 balls from a pool of 59 numbers, and then choose an additional ball (“Bonus Ball”) from the same pool. Normally, a ticket cost $1 and this ticket of $1 gives a player two plays. The maximum number of plays that a player is allowed to play on a single New York Lottery ticket is 10, in multiples of two, for a total price of $5.

As with most lotteries, to play the New York Lottery, you will be required to pick up a lottery slip for any authorized New York Lottery retailer. Each lottery slip has 10 game panels with each panel having squares numbered from 1 through 59. Using a blue or black pen, you are required to choose six of the squares numbers from 1 through 59. As with most lottery games, this process can be done manually or by choosing the Quick Pick option which lets the computer randomly generate and select your numbers from you so as to save time.

After selecting your numbers, you can go on to select your wager amount. Each play of $1 means you can choose numbers on 02 of the game panels on the slip. Should you desire to play all ten game panels, your total ticket price will be $5. It is not obligatory to choose the payment option for your winnings at the time of purchase of your ticket as is the case with some lotteries. You are given up to 60 days from the date you claim a jackpot prize to choose between the “Cash lump sum payment” and the “Annuitized form of payment”.

After all the aforementioned steps, you can hand in your slip to the lottery retailer for him/her to print your ticket. For each play slip processed, you will receive a separate ticket. After the ticket has been printed, verify your ticket to make sure all your numbers as well as the date of print are correct as tickets cannot be cancelled. Some features which seek to increase your odds of winning include;

Play It Again

This feature gives a player the chance to purchase an exact duplicate of a ticket he/she purchased within the last 30 days. Hand the ticket you wish to duplicate to the lottery retailer and ask him/her to “Play It Again”. An exact duplicate of the ticket will be printed for the next available draw. There is no additional cost for using this feature as the cost of the duplicate is the same as that of the original.

Bonus Number

This is the seventh number drawn during the New York Lotto draw and is used only in determining the winners of the second prize, who need to match 5 of the 6 main numbers in addition to the Bonus Number to win the prize. Note that the Bonus number does not appear as a separate number on your ticket.

Playing Online

As with other major lottery games, the New York Lottery can also be played online through any of the wide variety of online lottery website. Playing online is not as laborious and stressful as playing via an authorized agent as you will not need to wait in long queues for your turn to play the lottery. You can simply sign up on any trusted website offering lottery services such as theLotter.com or the New York Lottery official website, nylottery.ny.gov and play the lottery by selecting your numbers. Playing online guarantees the safety of your ticket and funds and makes it easier for you to cash in on winnings as non-jackpot winnings are automatically deposited into your account.

Winnings and Prizes

Drawings for the New York Lottery are held on Wednesday and Sunday each week at 11:21 PM (New York Time. Players can purchase tickets each day from 4 AM till 3:30 AM the next day or 11:00 PM on draw nights. Draws can be watched live on TV every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:21 PM. During the drawings, the person in charge draws six balls from the pool of 59 balls and then, a seventh ball known as the Bonus Ball is selected from the same pool. The NY Lotto has a very simple prize structure as only one prize division is affected by the Bonus Ball (second prize). The first price (jackpot) can be won by matching all six main balls drawn.

The odds per line of doing so stand at 1 in 45,057.474 million. It should be noted that this odd is per line and given the fact that each play consists of a minimum of two lines, the jackpot has a winning odd of 1 in 27.6 million. The second prize which is the only prize division affected by the Bonus Ball is won when a player matches 5 main numbers in addition to the Bonus Ball. Odds stand at 1 in 7.5 million.

Other prizes exist for players who are able to match 5, 4 or 3 of the main balls and of course, the more the numbers matched, the more the prize amount. Winners have up to 12 from the date of their winning draw to claim their prizes. NY Lottery winnings are subject to federal and state income taxes. Players of this lottery game must be at least 18 years old. The minimum guaranteed jackpot amount is $2 million which can be paid out as a lump sum or in 26 graduated payments. The first big NY lottery winner was Lou Eisenberg, who in 1981, won a sum of $5 million.

However, at the time, players were unable to choose cash payments as only annuitized payments were allowed. Despite being the third-oldest modern lottery game in the United States, the New York Lottery is continually being criticized for its decrease in payouts over the years. Originally the jackpot amount for this lottery game stood at $3 million but as of April 2013, the prize amount was decreased to $2 million while the rollovers on Thanksgiving weekends were reduced from $300,000 to $200,000. It should be noted, however, that a portion of the funds raised by the New York Lottery goes to help community causes which are limited solely to education. In 1967, the mantra of this lottery was “Your Chance of a Lifetime to Help Education” and due to the fact that it has since raised over $34 billion for that cause, it can be said that this lottery game has remained true to its word.
